Our last two days at the resort flew by. Before I could blink, we were all standing in line waiting to board our plane back to Richmond, Virginia. Daniele and I stood arm in arm just as we had seven days ago.

“Did you and Trey work everything out?”

I’d been dying to ask her, but Jace made sure to keep me busy on our final days. My gut feeling told me it had been at Trey’s request.

Daniele glanced my way with a look in her eyes that I couldn’t quite read.

“I—”

She paused and held out her ticket for the gate agent to scan, and then I did the same. We made our way down the ramp without saying a word.

Once we’d found our seats, I leaned over and said, “We’ll talk about it back home.”

Daniele grabbed onto my forearm and shook her head.

“Please sit with me.”

I frowned and looked over my shoulder at Trey and Jace, who was sliding into their seats a few spaces away. Jace’s gaze found mine, and he shrugged. I shifted my gaze back to Daniele and then slid in beside her.

“Okay, what the hell is going on? I thought you two figured it out.”

“We did.” She fumbled with her laptop bag but eventually got it under the seat in front of her. “It had always been the plan to have you two sit together going and then switch coming back.”

I eyed her closely.

“Don’t look at me like I’m a mystery you need to figure out, Arya.”

“I just thought…”

She turned in her seat and sighed.

“You know when I hurt, it really hurts.”

I nodded that I understood. Daniele had thick skin. She could take on a lot and not feel the affects of it. I’d witnessed her do it more times than I’d like to admit. I personally felt like she was just good at seeming okay when in reality, she was anything but.

“And seeing those messages really hurt my feelings, but after I heard him out, I couldn’t help but to also understand.” She sat back, reached for my hand, and laced our fingers together. “I know he loves me, and I love the hell out of him.”

“Do you forgive him, though?”

The forgiving part was most important.

“I do,” she answered without pause. “And it’s simply because I know the type of man he is. I also know that he’s my man, and no one from his past can change that. Not even a ten-minute conversation to close out what used to be can do it.”

“Good because you two are the epitome of love.”

“We aren’t the staple for relationships, Ry.”

“I just mean—”

“No…” she shook her head and glanced at me. “You can’t keep doing this to yourself.”

“Doing what?”

I didn’t know why but I felt myself getting defensive.

“Living through Trey and me or even your parents. No two stories are the same, and you shouldn’t base what you believe love to be on other people’s relationships. If you want things to work between you and Jace…” Her voice trailed off, and she huffed.
